Amidst the health crisis we’re currently facing, the Department of Education pursues the opening of classes this coming August 24.
In compliance with the President's directive of no face to face classes until the availability of a vaccine. Dep Ed prepares for a distance learning approach to accompany student’s needs.
What is Distance Learning?
- this refers to a learning delivery modality where learning takes place between the teacher and the learners who are geographically remote from each other. This modality has three types: Modular Distance Learning (MDL), Online Distance Learning (ODL), and TV/Radio-Based Instruction.
Modular Distance Learning
- It allows learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy. Students are provided with learning materials, textbooks, activity sheets, study guides, and other study materials. Still, teachers are tasked to monitor the learner’s performance. Students may ask them through e-mail, telephone, text message, etc. Where possible, teachers may visit students who seek remediation or assistance. Parents or any member of the family may serve as para-teachers.
Online Distance Learning
- This type of learning revolves around using various technologies accessed through the internet. The internet is used to facilitate learner-teacher and peer-to-peer communication. This requires both students and mentors to at least have an electronic device and a stable internet connection. It also suggests the use of virtual classrooms e.g. Google Classroom, Edmodo, Schoology, etc.
Blended Learning
- From the word itself, it combines face-to-face with any or a mix of online distance learning, modular distance learning, and TV/Radio-based Instruction. This type of learning will enable the school to limit face-to-face learning and follow health care protocols like social distancing. The production of the needed teacher’s and learner’s material as well as the support of media institutions like TV and radio stations must be considered.
Dep Ed assures that any decision they will make for the continuation of classes. Health, safety, and well-being will always be prioritized.
